Morocco sells more tomatoes to the EU

canasta tomate preparando tomates venta 109710 3942According to data provided by the Euroestacom (Icex-Eurostat) statistical service, corresponding to the period between August 1 and July 31, in the last 8 campaigns, the Netherlands and Spain have been reducing their tomato sales in the European Union (EU) campaign after campaign, while imports from Morocco are constantly growing.

In the last 8 campaigns, Spanish tomato sales in the EU have decreased by -9.61%, going from 1,414.73 million kilos in the 2011/2014 campaign to 1,278.69 in the 2018/2019 campaign. The Netherlands has reduced its sales by -5.82% from 1,527.5 in 2011/2012 to 1,438.64 million kilos in the 2018/2019 campaign. Meanwhile, Morocco has its sales by 31.42%, going from 567.2 million kilos in the 2011/2012 campaign to 745.44 million kilos sold in the EU in the 2018/2019 campaign that just ended.

In the last campaign, the EU purchased a total of 4,880.6 million kilos of tomatoes for 6,478.41 million euro and an average price of € 1,327 / kg. The Netherlands, Spain, and Morocco are the three main suppliers of tomato to the EU Member States and accounted for 29.48%, 26.2%, and 15.27% of the volume, respectively.

The Netherlands is the world's largest supplier of tomatoes to the EU. During this last campaign it sold 1,438.64 million kilos of tomatoes worth 2,181.24 million euro, at an average price of € 1,516 / kg; the price Highest of the three major suppliers, 12.33% more expensive than Spain, and 31.94% more expensive than Morocco.

Spain is the second tomato supplier to the European Union at a short distance from the Netherlands, with a volume of 1,278.69 million kilos worth 1,699.51 million euro, and an average price of € 1,329 / kg, i.e. 15,66% more expensive than the tomatoes sold by Morocco.

Morocco was the third supplier of tomatoes to the EU by volume with 745.44 million kilos worth 856.25 million euros, and an average price of € 1,149 / kg.

France ranked fourth with 285.08 million kilos worth 382.59 million euro and an average price of € 1,342 / kg.

It was followed by Germany in the 2018/2019 campaign with a volume of 181.29 million kilos worth 334.33 million euro and an average price of € 1,844 / kg.

Turkey, which is causing so many problems by generating a multitude of health alerts for excess pesticides in its vegetables, sold to the EU a total of 164.6 million kilos of tomatoes worth 155.78 million euro at an average price of € 0.946 / kg in this campaign.
